3,001 miles across the USA

In order to get to Ashland from NYC, I had the brilliant idea to drive cross-country.  We made it in 6 days, driving on average 10-12 hours per day with our very well-behaved cats in the back seat. Here are some highlights from our journey:

* Place we know we never want to visit again: Council Bluffs, Iowa

* Best Cheap Hotel:  Salt Lake City La Quinta

* Best Dinner: The New Yorker in Salt Lake City

* Cheapest Gas: $2.38 per gallon in Iowa City, Iowa

* Nicest People:  Winnemuka, Nevada

* Jerkiest Drivers: Reno, Nevada (close runner-up: Sacramento, CA)

* Best McDonald's in the universe: Laramie, Wyoming

* Most Desolate: Grand Forks, Nebraska

* Best Sight: 6 Perfect rainbows between Mount Shasta and Yreka, CA

* Most Over-Hyped Interstate Construction: Chicago,Illinois

* Worst Meal: Applebee's in Grand Forks, Nebraska

* Best Road Music: Johnny Cash and Jimmy Reed
